DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS (P)

DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS (P)
$37.50
Now in its fifth edition, Diffusion of Innovations is a classic work on the spread of new ideas.

In this renowned book, Everett M. Rogers, professor and chair of the Department of Communication & Journalism at the University of New Mexico, explains how new ideas spread via communication channels over time. Such innovations are initially perceived as uncertain and even risky. To overcome this uncertainty, most people seek out others like themselves who have already adopted the new idea. Thus the diffusion process consists of a few individuals who first adopt an innovation, then spread the word among their circle of acquaintances--a process which typically takes months or years. But there are exceptions: use of the Internet in the 1990s, for example, may have spread more rapidly than any other innovation in the history of humankind. Furthermore, the Internet is changing the very nature of diffusion by decreasing the importance of physical distance between people. The fifth edition addresses the spread of the Internet, and how it has transformed the way human beings communicate and adopt new ideas.

Directing the Choral Music Program is a comprehensive introduction to developing and managing choral music programs from elementary through high-school and adult levels. Designed primarily as a choral methods text for the undergraduate music education curriculum, it is also useful for choral directors in schools, churches, and communities. Broad in scope and practical in orientation, the book is structured around three basic units: the administrative process, rehearsal and performance planning, and choral techniques. In addition to core topics--including recruitment and auditioning, classroom management, vocal development, and curriculum and performance planning--it features many subjects not covered in other texts, such as student discipline, philosophy of choral music education, and the history of choral conducting. The author also presents material on directing show choirs and musicals; organizing choir tours, festivals, and contests; working with adolescent singers; and teaching sight-reading skills.
Directing the Choral Music Program incorporates study and discussion questions at the end of each chapter, numerous illustrations and musical examples, and a variety of class projects throughout. The appendixes offer helpful lists of music publishers and distributors; manufacturers of equipment, supplies, and attire; recommended choral repertory; voice class resources; and sight-singing materials. Grounded in the author's extensive experience in directing choirs at all levels, this book combines practical methods with a research base, providing readers with a solid foundation for a career in choral directing.

DISCOURSE GRAMMAR OF THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT: A PRACTICAL IN

DISCOURSE GRAMMAR OF THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT: A PRACTICAL IN
    $33.39
In Discourse Grammar of the Greek New Testament, Steve Runge, scholar in residence at Logos Bible Software, explores New Testament Greek grammatical conventions by focusing on the communication tasks they accomplish through discourse analysis. His focus on discourse analysis emphasizes the ways in which words are used in texts and contexts, and has less to do with the elements of speech and focuses, instead, on how humans cognitively process language.

In doing so, Runge is consciously building on the ground breaking work of James Barr entitled Semantics of Biblical Language which focused on lexical linguistics (an element of speech) rather than grammatical linguistics. Runge, in effect, picks up from where Barr left off and attempts to show the exegetical significance of discourse grammar for students of the New Testament.

Runge's project is dynamic and multi-layered. One might even call it a "cross-linguistic" and "function-based" approach to discourse analysis that treat aspects of the language often examined in isolation, or only with lip-service. The result, according to Daniel Wallace, is that Runge "has made discourse analysis accessible, systematic, comprehensive, and meaningful to students of the New Testament".

As such, Runge's Discourse Grammar of the Greek New Testament offers direct treatment of linguistic phenomena often truncated or all together mishandled by traditional grammars. Runge provides ample examples from the New Testament to illustrate his points, and does so with accompanying commentary. Everywhere he demonstrates that "if there is more than one way of accomplishing a discourse task, there is likely a meaning associated with each choice" (148).

In some ways Runge's book seems like it may be a substitute for traditional grammars. It is not. It is, rather, a grammar that augments specific aspects of the language that traditional grammars often do not have, or choose not to have, room to highlight the importance of discourse analysis for sound exegesis.

The technological revolution of the last ten years has radically changed document designers' materials, processes, and tools of the trade. In short, choices about everything from typography and color to planning and production have changed -- even multiplied. The first new text for the college market in ten years, Kimball and Hawkins' "Document Design" assumes from the start that students are working online to produce a fuller range of print and online documents, designed and delivered differently in a digital world. Through practical, accessible advice and examples, Kimball and Hawkins lay out the array of elements and choices that document designers need to consider, all in the context of a rhetorical framework that allows students to see the effects of those choices. The only text to integrate a range of theoretical perspectives, visual perception, visual culture, and visual rhetoric, "Document Design" teaches students to think more critically about their own design decisions and to keep usability in mind every step of the way. True to its message, this artfully designed text practices the principles it teaches and is sure to become a reference that students will keep.

His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science's greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts, very human ambitions, and bitter rivalries. With humility unspoiled by false modesty, Watson relates his and Crick's desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences, the identification of the basic building block of life. Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children (DPE) is the longest-running elementary methods textbook on the market, and this latest edition is just as pertinent, essential, and cutting-edge as ever. DPE does more than provide the foundational knowledge needed to teach quality physical education--it applies this knowledge with an array of physical activities that equip preservice physical educators to teach with confidence from their first day.

Now, for the first time, the text is made even more practical with the free interactive website Dynamic PE ASAP, which replaces the previous print resource Dynamic Physical Education Curriculum Guide: Lesson Plans for Implementation. With the Dynamic PE ASAP site, teachers have access to ready-to-use activities and complete lesson plans, as well as the ability to build their own lesson plans from the provided activities. This resource puts a complete curriculum for quality physical education at teachers' fingertips.

DPE also offers practical teaching tips, case studies of real-life situations to spark discussion, and instructor resources (an instructor guide, presentation package, and test package) that will make preparing for and teaching a course a breeze.

The 19th edition has been updated to reflect the latest knowledge and best practice in physical education, including the following:

  • A new chapter on physical activity and youth
  • Recent research on physical activity and the brain
  • Updated and expanded content on physical activity guidelines and assessment
  • New activities to integrate health concepts into the physical education curriculum
  • A chapter on lesson planning that is aligned with and linked to the Dynamic PE ASAP website
  • New technology features throughout the book
  • The 19th edition emphasizes creating a social and emotional learning environment in which all students can learn and thrive. The ultimate goal of DPE is to help students learn skills, be personally and socially responsible, and embrace the joy of physical activity for a lifetime.

The first 12 chapters of Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children lay the foundation for becoming an effective instructor of quality physical education. These chapters highlight the importance of physical activity and delve into identifying developmental needs, designing curriculum, writing lessons and assessments, and navigating school procedures.

Chapters 13 through 30 explore how to teach the objectives of physical education, including these:

  • Foundational skills, such as locomotor and manipulative skills
  • Specialized skills, such as game skills and gymnastics
  • Lifetime activities and sport skills, such as basketball and hockey
  • These chapters include an array of field-tested activities, all listed in progression from easiest to most difficult, enabling teachers to incorporate proper skill sequencing.

With its emphasis on skill development and the promotion of lifelong healthy activity, Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children is highly applicable for both physical educators and classroom teachers. It is an ideal text to support an elementary methods PE course, providing the detail that PETE students need. The content is also very accessible to students learning to become elementary education teachers.

With this latest edition, Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children remains the go-to book for both preservice and in-service teachers--just as it started out as 19 editions ago.

    $67.49 - $89.99

The book will be useful for all kinds of dynamical systems courses.... [It] shows the power of using a computer algebra program to study dynamical systems, and, by giving so many worked examples, provides ample opportunity for experiments. ... [It] is well written and a pleasure to read, which is helped by its attention to historical background.

--Mathematical Reviews (Review of First Edition)

Since the first edition of this book was published in 2001, Maple(TM) has evolved from Maple V into Maple 13. Accordingly, this new edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded to include more applications, examples, and exercises, all with solutions; two new chapters on neural networks and simulation have also been added. There are also new sections on perturbation methods, normal forms, Gröbner bases, and chaos synchronization.

The work provides an introduction to the theory of dynamical systems with the aid of Maple. The author has emphasized breadth of coverage rather than fine detail, and theorems with proof are kept to a minimum. This text is aimed at senior undergraduates, graduate students, and working scientists in various branches of applied mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Dynamics of Muslim Worlds: Regional, Theological, and Missiological Perspectives

Dynamics of Muslim Worlds: Regional, Theological, and Missiological Perspectives
    $32.00

Christians in the West have many questions about the identity of Islam and Muslim societies. Due in part to misleading media reports and a lack of interreligious dialogue, a majority of Western Christians view Islam as more prone to violence. The perplexity is compounded by news of violent conflicts involving Muslim communities in various parts of the world. Discussions about Muslims in the media often give the impression that Islam is a single, uniform entity.

The reality is that global Islam is a complex and diverse phenomenon, not a monolithic one. Unfortunately, what makes the headlines often shapes Christian mission strategies that are overshadowed, if not controlled, by such reports. The challenge for understanding Islam is further complicated by the fact that an already very diverse Islam across the world stage is fluid and dynamic, with changes motivated as much by Islamic agency from within as by forces impinging from without.

Dynamics of Muslim Worlds brings together leading missiologists, theologians, and historians from the 2016 Missiology Lectures at Fuller Theological Seminary's School of Intercultural Studies to present a nuanced account of contemporary Muslim societies. Edited by Evelyne A. Reisacher, the contributions to this Missiological Engagements volume explore the changing dynamics of Islam today and how current religious and social climates shape Christian engagement with Muslims. This is a fresh look at a topic of increasing importance in our present global context.

Missiological Engagements charts interdisciplinary and innovative trajectories in the history, theology, and practice of Christian mission, featuring contributions by leading thinkers from both the Euro-American West and the majority world whose missiological scholarship bridges church, academy, and society.

    Earth's Catastrophic Past

    Earth's Catastrophic Past
    $350.09
An alarming number of Christian leaders and teachers believe that God "created" through evolutionary processes over millions of years, that Adam and Eve descended from a hominid population, and that there has never been a global flood. Step-by-step, Dr. Snelling examines evolutionary interpretations of the geologic record and deconstructs the misplaced assumptions and conclusions on which those interpretations are based.

By the end of Earth's Catastrophic Past, readers will have their faith restored in Genesis as real, literal history, and be convinced that the scientific evidence, correctly discerned and applied, is indeed consistent with God's record of our origins and history found in Genesis 1-11.

    What makes an effective executive?

The measure of the executive, Peter F. Drucker reminds us, is the ability to get the right things done. This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive. Intelligence, imagination, and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that mold them into results.

Drucker identifies five practices essential to business effectiveness that can, and must, be learned:
  • Managing time
  • Choosing what to contribute to the organization
  • Knowing where and how to mobilize strength for best effect
  • Setting the right priorities
  • Knitting all of them together with effective decision-making
  • Ranging widely through the annals of business and government, Peter F. Drucker demonstrates the distinctive skill of the executive and offers fresh insights into old and seemingly obvious business situations.

    EISENHOWER: A LIFE

    EISENHOWER: A LIFE
    $17.00
Acclaimed historian Paul Johnson's lively, succinct profile of Dwight D. Eisenhower explores his life and enduring legacy

In the rousing style he's famous for, Paul Johnson offers a fascinating biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower, with particular focus on his years as a five-star general and his two terms as president of the United States. Johnson chronicles Ike's modest childhood in Kansas, his West Point education, and his swift rise through the military ranks, culminating in his appointment as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces during World War II. Johnson then paints a rich portrait of Eisenhower's presidency, many elements of which speak to American politics today: his ability to balance the budget, his mastery in managing an oppositional Congress, and his prescient warnings about the military-industrial complex. This brief yet satisfying portrait will appeal to biography lovers as well as enthusiasts of presidential and military history alike.
